This December, take a ferry to your New Years Eve party in Thailand
12 October 2026 • Brooke MackenzieDecember is peak season in Thailand — hot, mostly dry, and buzzing — which makes it one of the best times to visit. It’s also when the islands host the region’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations, from Koh Phangan’s beach raves to Phuket’s fireworks.
Sound like a plan? Be sure to book your accommodation and ferries ASAP. It’s a popular trip.

Why December is a great time to visit Thailand
The rains have cleared, the humidity chills out, and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the high 20s to low 30s°C. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi) is at its sun-drenched best, and the Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao) shake off the last of the wet season as the month goes on. Everything’s open, the seas are calmer, and the islands are in full swing.
The only catch? You’re not the only one who’s figured this out. December, and especially the week around New Year’s, is the busiest, priciest stretch of the year. Which is exactly why planning ahead pays off.
Where should you spend New Year’s Eve in Thailand?
On an island — obviously! Here’s the quick rundown of our top picks.
- Koh Phangan — the party headquarters. The island that gave the world the Full Moon Party does not do New Year’s by halves. Expect a sprawling beach rave that runs till sunrise. Get there via Koh Samui to Koh Phangan.
- Phuket — the big-countdown energy. Fireworks over Patong, the controlled chaos of Bangla Road, and lantern releases on the sand. It’s Thailand’s most “city New Year” island, and a brilliant base for hopping onward to Phuket to Koh Phi Phi.
- Koh Phi Phi — small island, enormous party. Fire shows, buckets, and a countdown right on the beach. Tiny, loud, unforgettable.
- Koh Samui — polished and a touch more grown-up. Fireworks over Chaweng, beach clubs and proper dinners — great if you want the celebration without the full backpacker rave. It’s also your Gulf hub for a hop over to Koh Samui to Koh Tao.
- Koh Tao — the chilled one. Bonfires, a few beach bars and a divers’-crowd countdown. Low-key, in the best way.

How do you island-hop between the New Year’s parties?
Ferries connect all of them — you just need to know which coast you’re on. The Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao) are a tight little cluster of short hops, so you can base yourself on one and bounce between the others in under a couple of hours. On the other side, the Andaman islands (Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Lanta) form their own cluster.
The one thing first-timers trip over: you can’t easily ferry between the Gulf and the Andaman — they’re on opposite coasts, so crossing from, say, Koh Samui to Phuket means a short flight, not a boat. Pick one cluster per trip and you’ll have a far smoother time.
And the non-negotiable bit: book your ferries before New Year’s week. This is the busiest sailing week of the year; boats and beds genuinely sell out, and the 31st and 1st are the worst possible days to improvise. Lock in your Koh Samui to Koh Phangan or Phuket to Koh Phi Phi crossing in advance and show up smug.

Hold on. Isn’t the Thai New Year in April?
Yes! Thailand has two NYE’s. December 31st is the global countdown you already know: fireworks, beach parties, champagne. Songkran (13–15 April) is the traditional Thai New Year. It’s a nationwide, three-day water fight that’s one of the best parties on earth in its own right. This guide is all about the December one, but if you’re reading this in spring: pack a waterproof phone case and thank us later.
What’s the weather like in Thailand in December?
Hot and mostly dry. It’s classic beach weather! The Andaman coast is reliably sunny and calm, making December prime time for Phuket, Phi Phi and Krabi. The Gulf islands can catch a few lingering showers early in the month as their wet season bows out, but it clears up and the diving around Koh Tao stays excellent. Expect daytime temps in the high 20s to low 30s°C and warm, swimmable seas across the board.
When should you book a December trip to Thailand?
Now. Genuinely, now! Peak season + the New Year holiday = the highest demand and the highest prices of the entire year. Flights climb, the best beachfront beds vanish, and the island ferries around the 31st fill up fast. The earlier you lock in your dates, accommodation and crossings, the better you’ll do on price and the less you’ll be refreshing a sold-out schedule on the 30th.
When you’re ready, search your island ferry on Ferryscanner to compare every operator, time and price in one place — then save the e-ticket and go enjoy the fireworks.

Frequently asked questions
Is December peak season in Thailand?
Yes! December is the heart of Thailand’s high season, thanks to dry, sunny weather and the Christmas–New Year holidays. Expect the best conditions alongside the highest prices and biggest crowds, especially around New Year’s Eve.
Which Thai island has the best New Year’s Eve party?
Koh Phangan for the legendary beach rave, Phuket for fireworks and big-city nightlife, Koh Phi Phi for a wild small-island party, and Koh Samui for something a little more polished. Choose your island, choose your vibe.
Do ferries run on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day?
Yes, the main island routes keep running over New Year’s, but they get extremely busy and some schedules are reduced on the 1st. Book in advance and travel earlier in the day where you can.
Is Thailand expensive in December?
It’s the priciest time of year. Peak season plus the holidays push up flights, hotels and tours. Booking early is the single best way to keep costs down.
Is it rainy in Thailand in December?
Mostly no. The Andaman coast is dry and sunny; the Gulf islands can see a little rain early in the month before clearing. Overall, December is one of the driest, most reliable months to visit.
