Types of ferries in the Balearic and Canary Islands
- High-speed ferries. The Balearic and Canary Islands have modern high-speed vessels that allow fast and comfortable trips between islands. For example, the Benchijigua Express of Fred. Olsen Express, a fast trimaran, connects Tenerife with La Gomera in approximately 50 minutes. The Bocayna Express operates between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in just 25 minutes.
- Conventional ferries. For longer trips or if you prefer more comfort, conventional ferries offer larger spaces and additional services. Companies such as Baleària and Naviera Armas operate routes between the mainland and the islands, as well as between the islands themselves. For example, Baleària offers routes between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, with prices starting at 55 € per passenger.
- Ferries for vehicles. If you want to explore the islands with your own vehicle, many companies allow the transport of cars, motorcycles and bicycles. For example, Baleària allows you to take your car from 20 € on routes such as Palma (Mallorca) to Ibiza.

Best time to travel by ferry
In the Canary Islands the climate is stable and constant throughout the year. However, if you want to avoid crowds, it is best to find out which months are the best to travel.
Besides, it’s not just about dodging crowds. Each island has its own calendar of festivities and traditions that add a special touch to the trip. From carnivals in Tenerife to celebrations in Balearic villages with centuries of history, there are plenty of ways to soak up the local culture. Why not time your getaway to coincide with one of their local festivals?
- Spring (April to May): Pleasant weather and fewer tourists. Ideal for exploring without crowds. March 1 is the day of the Balearic Islands, all the islands develop events such as concerts or cultural activities. May 30, meanwhile, is the day of the Canary Islands.
- Summer (June, July and August): As we all know, these months are high season with more tourists and higher prices. But if you have no choice but to travel during these months, don’t worry, you will find thousands of activities to sign up for. In the Canary Islands you can enjoy pilgrimages where you can dance and drink until dawn. And in the Balearic Islands, for the day of Carmen you will be able to see unique processions in coastal towns.
- Autumn (September to October): Still warm weather and less tourists. Perfect to enjoy the islands in peace and quiet. And if you are lucky, going in September is the best option to go on vacation. In September in Lanzarote you will find the pilgrimage of Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes.
- Winter (November to March): Mild temperatures, but some routes may have reduced schedules. If you decide to come at this time of the year, you will be able to spend Christmas and the holidays in a paradisiacal destination.

Ferry ticket prices can vary considerably depending on the route, the season and the type of service you choose. However, it is possible to find options for all budgets, from budget tickets to luxury options. But in this guide we will help you to see what prices you can find on each route.

What to expect from your ferry trip
Ferry travel between the islands is not just a means of transport, but an experience that you can fully enjoy. Depending on the company and the type of ferry, you can find different services and amenities on board.
Space and comfort
Conventional and high-speed ferries usually offer several seating options. On the larger, more comfortable ferries, you will find:
- Interior lounges: Comfortable seats where you can relax during the trip.
- Outdoor decks: If you prefer to enjoy the open air and panoramic views, the outdoor deck is an excellent option. You will be able to feel the sea breeze while enjoying the scenery.
- Cabins: If you are making a long trip or prefer privacy, some companies offer the option of booking a cabin, especially on ferries that make longer trips, such as those connecting Tenerife with Gran Canaria.
Onboard entertainment
Depending on the length of the journey and the ferry company, you can enjoy various entertainment activities during your trip:
- Restaurants and cafeterias: Most ferries offer dining options on board, from quick cafes to more upscale restaurants. Enjoying a meal while sailing is part of the experience.
- Gift stores: On some ferries, you will find stores on board where you can buy souvenirs and local products.
- Screens and multimedia entertainment: Some larger ferries have screens where you can watch movies or programs while sailing. Ideal if you have a long trip.
Spectacular views
One of the biggest attractions of ferry travel is the scenery. Whether in the Mediterranean or in the Atlantic, ferry trips offer you a unique perspective of the ocean and the islands that you can hardly get any other way.
Can I take my pet with me?
Yes, most ferry companies allow you to bring your pet on board! However, each company has different policies, so it is important to check the conditions before traveling.

Recommendations for traveling with pets
- Restrictions and fees: Be sure to check pet fares. Pets usually travel in a special area of the ferry or in a carrier. Some companies may charge an additional fee for transporting your pet.
- Documentation: Your pet may be required to have certain documents, such as a pet passport or health certificate. Be sure to comply with the regulations before boarding.
- Special areas: On most ferries, pets must stay in a designated area (usually on the outside deck or in designated interior spaces). Some companies allow pets to travel in the cabin, but it is best to check the company’s rules.
What about my car?
Definitely! In fact, traveling with your car aboard a ferry is an excellent option if you want to explore the islands independently. Most companies offer options to take vehicles.
We recommend that you check in advance with the company you are traveling with about the rules you need to know before boarding. You may need to be some time in advance to go through the procedure of boarding with a car.
Transportation of vehicles by ferry
- Balearic Islands: Companies such as Baleària and Trasmed operate routes where you can take your car, motorcycle or even a caravan. Prices vary, but vehicle tickets can cost between 40 € and 100 €, depending on the route and type of vehicle.
- Canary Islands: Companies such as Fred. Olsen and Naviera Armas also allow to take vehicles. The price varies according to the size of the vehicle and the distance between the islands, but, for example, a small car can cost between 60 € and 150 € for long trips.

Tips for traveling by car
- Book in advance: Vehicle tickets are usually limited, especially in high season. Therefore, it is advisable to book in advance.
- Space on the ship: Although you can bring your car, be sure to keep in mind that on some ferries there will not be immediate access to the vehicle during the trip. In addition, you may need to leave it parked in a designated area during the trip.
Tips for booking your ferry ticket
- Book early: Especially during high season (summer and vacations), ferry tickets sell out quickly. Be sure to book early to avoid last minute surprises.
- Compare prices: Use platforms such as Ferryscanner to compare prices and find the best deals among different companies.
- Consult timetables: Ferry schedules may vary depending on the season. Some ferries only operate during certain months of the year or with reduced schedules during the low season.
- Round-trip fares: Often, round-trip tickets offer discounts, so do not hesitate to check this option when making your reservation.
What to bring on your ferry trip
Although ferry rides are usually comfortable, it is important to bring certain essentials to ensure that your experience is as pleasant as possible:
- Comfortable clothing: Most ferries are air-conditioned, but it is important to wear light and comfortable clothing to be comfortable during the trip.
- Sun protection: Even if you are on the ferry, you will be exposed to the sun. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat if you will be on the outside deck.
- Entertainment: Although ferry rides are usually pleasant, it is useful to bring a book, music or games to keep you entertained during the trip.
- Documents: Be sure to bring your ferry tickets, IDs and other important documents. If you are traveling with your car, you will also need your vehicle documents.

The islands we recommend
Balearic Islands
- Mallorca: The main and largest island of the archipelago. Famous for its historic architecture, spectacular beaches and lively nightlife. In Palma, its capital, you can discover the majestic cathedral and get lost in charming alleys. In addition, Mallorca is perfect for hiking and cycling enthusiasts, with routes through the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range offering unforgettable views.
- Ibiza: Known worldwide for its parties and clubs, but there is much more to discover. It is also an island of contrasts: hidden coves, magical sunsets and a rural interior with hippie markets, white villages and paths between almond trees. If you decide to come, you can’t forget to wear nice outfits and come well-rested.
- Menorca: The perfect destination to relax. This island declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO is a haven of peace, with pristine beaches, crystal clear waters and coastal paths such as the Camí de Cavalls. Its towns, such as Ciutadella or Mahón, preserve an authentic charm and a rich gastronomic tradition.
- Formentera: The quietest jewel of the archipelago. Ideal for those seeking total disconnection. It is easy to travel by bicycle or motorcycle, and it enchants with its white sandy beaches and transparent waters that have little to envy the Caribbean. The slow pace of the island invites you to leave your watch at home and enjoy the present.
Canary Islands
- Tenerife: The largest and most diverse island of the archipelago. Here you can go from sunbathing on the beach to hiking through a volcanic landscape in the same day. The Teide National Park, with the highest peak in Spain, is its emblem. It also stands out for its charming villages, local wines and a rich cultural and gastronomic offer.
- Gran Canaria: An island with a thousand faces. From the dunes of Maspalomas to the pine forests in the interior, passing through lively cities like Las Palmas. Ideal for those looking for variety in their vacations: beach, mountains, culture and nightlife, all in one. In addition, its year-round warm climate makes it a safe bet.
- Lanzarote: An island from another planet. Its volcanic landscapes, especially in the Timanfaya National Park, look like something out of a science fiction movie. Ideal for those looking for something different: wild beaches, hiking trails and unique architecture thanks to the legacy of César Manrique.
- Fuerteventura: A paradise for sea and wind lovers. With some of the best beaches in Europe and turquoise waters perfect for surfing, kitesurfing or just relaxing. Its atmosphere is quieter, ideal for disconnecting and enjoying nature in its purest form.
