New Regulations On The Registration of Pets
Since the implementation of L. 4830/2021, in force from 23/09/2022, passengers travelling with pets must declare them when booking their ferry tickets. Pets are registered in the ferry companies’ electronic system and will receive free tickets for the journey.
According to this new rule, you must book your pet ticket in addition to your own passenger ticket before the trip – as pet tickets cannot be issued on board.
8 Things To Bring When You Travel With Your Pet
When travelling with your pet on board, it’s important to have all the necessary items to ensure a comfortable and safe journey for both you and your four-legged friend. Here’s a list of the essential things you should have with you.
- An up-to-date health booklet: Make sure your pet’s health booklet is up to date with all necessary vaccines and treatments. This is necessary for boarding the ship.
- Microchip: The pet must be microchipped for easy identification. Make sure the data on the microchip is up to date.
- Pet carrier: Especially for small pets, a carrier is essential for their safety and comfort during the journey.
- Leash and muzzle: A sturdy leash to keep your pet close and safe on board. In public areas the use of a muzzle is almost always mandatory, especially for larger dogs.
- Food and water: Bring enough food and water for your pet for the duration of the trip, as well as bowls to ensure they can eat and drink water without stress.
- Blanket or pillow: A familiar object such as a blanket or pillow can help the pet feel more comfortable and secure.
- Litter bags: It is important to keep the areas clean. Bring enough bags to collect your pet’s waste.
- Favorite toy or game: A beloved toy can keep your pet occupied and help them stay calm during the trip.
With these items, your trip with your pet on board will be more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.
What Information Do You Need To Declare About Your Pet
In order to issue a ferry ticket for your pet, you need to fill in certain details either online or in paper form, depending on the ferry company you have chosen to travel with:
- Number of the pet’s health booklet or passport
- Identification number (microchip)
- Category of animal (pet, therapy, assistance)
- Size: large (> 10 kg) or small-medium (≤ 10 kg)
It is necessary that the pet has had all the mandatory vaccinations (to be listed on the booklet) and has a microchip. In addition, you must have their recently updated health booklet with you. Keep in mind you are responsible for their safety and hygiene during the trip.

Where Can My Pet Stay During the Ferry Trip?
Each ferry company has its own pet policy, but there are some common rules. Usually, pets are not allowed indoors in lounges, passenger cabins, bars, and restaurants for hygiene reasons. The options for pets are:
- On deck, in a carrier, or just with a leash and possibly a muzzle.
- In a special area for pets. There is often a designated area on board where pets can stay safely (in a cage) throughout the trip. The cages provide a clean and comfortable environment for your pet, away from the public passenger areas. It is important to book in advance, as places in these venues are limited and demand can be high. Using a crate ensures that your pet will be safe and calm during the journey.
- In pet-friendly cabins that are specially designed to accommodate pets during the trip. In these cabins, your pet will have its own space, ensuring comfort and safety for both of you. They are equipped with everything you need to take care of your pet, such as clean surfaces and suitable areas for hygiene. It is important to book in advance as places are limited.
Important Note: On highspeed ferries, usually only small pets weighing less than 10 kg are allowed on board – and must stay in the carrier at all times.
How Many Pets Can I Bring?
According to Regulation (EU) No. 576/2013, you are allowed to travel with up to 5 pets, as long as you are their guardian. Each pet must be adequately vaccinated and have its own health booklet. Therefore, the maximum number of pets per booking is five.
What Is The Cost Of The Pet Ferry Ticket?
Usually, the transport of your pet on Greek ferries is free of charge. However, you must declare it before the trip and issue an official ticket for your pet as previously mentioned.
*As the implementation of the new regulations is still in progress, some ferry companies may not have fully integrated all of the regulations and therefore may be more flexible regarding the carriage and declaration of pets.
What Should I Look Out For When I Travel With My Pet?
It’s important to pay attention to a few things to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort during the trip:
- Avoid overfeeding: Before the trip, don’t overfeed your beloved friend to avoid them having any stomach problems. The ferry ride might be more bumpy than you think.
- Avoid giving unnecessary medicine: Do not give medications, such as those for nausea, without the guidance of your veterinarian.
- Do not leave your pet in the car in the garage: Under no circumstances should you ever leave your pet in the car or in the ship’s garage. Extreme temperatures and noise can be dangerous and even fatal.
By following these tips, you’ll ensure your pet is safe and comfortable throughout your trip.
