Traveling to the UK? Don’t forget your ETA

If you’re an EU citizen planning a trip to the United Kingdom by ferry or shuttle, there’s a new rule in place.

As of April 2025, EU citizens now require an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter the United Kingdom. This is part of a broader UK government program to digitize and streamline border control. Let’s get into what this means for your ferry travel plans.

So, what is the UK ETA for EU citizens?

The ETA is a new travel requirement for visitors who do not need a visa to enter the UK. It is not a visa, or tax, and does not by itself permit entry into the UK. You’ll need it if you’re coming for:

  • Tourism

  • Visiting friends or family

  • Short business trips or transiting through the UK

Who needs an ETA?

The electronic travel authorization is now required by EU nationals, as well as travelers from countries like the US, Australia, Canada, and many more. British and Irish citizens, as well as EU citizens with settled or pre-settled status in the UK, do not need an ETA.

How do I apply for an ETA?

The UK ETA for EU and non-EU citizens is easy to obtain online, and is valid for more than one trip.

  • Cost: £16 (€18) per applicant (from 9th April 2025)

  • Validity: 2 years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first)

  • Apply online: Through the UK ETA website or app

  • Approval time: Most are processed in minutes, but you should apply at least 3 days in advance

Without an approved ETA, you won’t be allowed to board your ferry, shuttle, or flight to the UK.
