About Irish Ferries

Irish Ferries has been connecting Ireland with the UK and continental Europe for over 50 years. It launched the first direct Ireland–France ferry link in 1973 and has since grown into one of the region’s leading operators. Its network now includes high-frequency routes on the Irish Sea, year-round overnight sailings to France, and up to 20 daily departures on the Dover–Calais route, introduced in 2021. Backed by the Irish Continental Group, the company continues to invest in fleet development and infrastructure to meet evolving passenger and freight needs.

Onboard, travellers enjoy spacious lounges, a range of dining options, and pet-friendly services. Irish Ferries is also firmly committed to environmental responsibility, operating in full compliance with international pollution prevention standards and investing in fuel-efficient technologies. Its focus on safety, innovation, and service quality has earned it industry recognition, including the 2024 ITTN Award for Best Ferry Company and the Innovation Excellence Award.

Irish Ferries Pet Policy

Pets are welcome on Irish Ferries vessels, but you’ll need to book them in advance. Dogs, cats, and ferrets travel in onboard kennels, and owners can visit them during the crossing at set times, accompanied by a crew member.

  • Pets must be added when booking to secure a kennel, as space is limited. Please, get in touch with our support team to complete this process.
  • Pets are not allowed inside passenger areas or to roam freely on deck.
  • Dogs must wear a muzzle whenever outside the kennel, regardless of size.
  • Service and assistance dogs are allowed in passenger areas without a kennel, provided they have the correct documentation and equipment (jacket and harness).
  • Each pet must have an EU Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate, a microchip, and a valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days old). Dogs traveling to Ireland also need a tapeworm treatment done 1 to 5 days before arrival.
  • Pets must be transported to and from the ship in a suitable pet carrier if traveling as foot passengers.
  • Visits to the kennels are possible during the trip, and you can take your pet for a short walk when permitted.
  • Comfort items like a blanket and a water bowl are recommended for your pet’s kennel.
  • Each kennel has a fee depending on size, and each pet needs a separate unit.

For more details, including kennel sizes and documentation requirements, get in touch with our support team.

Irish Ferries Luggage Allowance

Foot passengers on Irish Ferries can bring luggage up to 22 kg per item, with restrictions on the number and size of bags depending on the route. You are allowed to carry one small piece of hand luggage with you, while larger items will be checked through the luggage handling system.

  • On Dublin–Holyhead routes, checked luggage is placed on a carousel during check-in and collected at your destination terminal. Access during the voyage is not possible.
  • On Rosslare–Pembroke routes, foot passengers can bring luggage onto the transfer bus. You may keep it on the bus or carry it to the upper decks, but leaving it on the bus is at your own risk.
  • On Ireland–France routes, foot passengers carry their luggage directly onboard using either a shuttle bus or pedestrian walkway, depending on the port.

Vehicle passengers can carry more luggage, but all belongings must stay inside the vehicle during the crossing. Specific limits may vary depending on your route and ticket type. Always check your ticket details when booking to know exactly what is allowed.

Guiding Principles

Irish Ferries is dedicated to providing reliable and comfortable sea travel, connecting Ireland, the UK, and France for both passengers and freight. The company’s mission is to offer frequent and efficient services while continually enhancing the experience on board through modern vessels, spacious lounges, dining options, and priority services.

At the heart of Irish Ferries’ operations is a strong commitment to sustainability and responsible growth. Recognising the challenges of the maritime sector, Irish Ferries is actively working to reduce emissions by exploring alternative fuels, improving vessel efficiency, and partnering with ports to prepare for future shore power and cleaner energy solutions. The company also prioritises waste reduction, the adoption of clean technologies, and the continuous upgrade of infrastructure.
