Types of ferries in Greece
In Greece, there are different types of ferries to choose from, depending on your needs and the type of experience you are looking for. Knowing the options available will allow you to make the right choice for your trip.
- High Speed Ferries: High speed ferries are ideal for shorter trips between nearby islands. These ships are fast and modern, allowing travelers to save time on their journeys. However, they are more expensive than conventional ferries and usually do not have as much space for passengers. Despite being more expensive, they can be an excellent option if you are looking for speed and comfort over short distances.
- Conventional ferries: Conventional ferries are slower, but also more spacious. They offer a more relaxed experience, and usually have different types of accommodations, from seating in common areas to private cabins for longer trips. They are ideal if you are planning a long trip between islands and prefer to travel in more comfort and space. These ferries tend to be cheaper and allow greater flexibility, with more options for schedules and routes.
- Vehicle ferries: If you wish to bring your car, motorcycle or even a bicycle, many ferries offer a vehicle transport service. This allows you to explore the islands more freely, without relying on local public transportation. Ferries carrying vehicles are generally larger and offer a more comfortable experience for those traveling with their own transport.

What is the best ferry route?
Athens is the main departure point of the country, and has three ports: Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio. If you arrive by plane, the best option is to land in the capital and take your ferry from one of these ports, as you will not find better connections. Also, from abroad it is difficult to find direct flights to the islands. You can always take a domestic flight, but it is usually more tedious because of check-in queues and possible delays.
The ferry has always been the Greeks’ favorite mode of transportation: easy, fast and, let’s be honest, much more comfortable than being wedged into an airplane seat!

Where does my ferry leave from
Once you have booked your ferry ticket, check the port from which you are departing. On many islands there is more than one port and there can be quite a distance between them. If you don’t want any last minute surprises, check our interactive map to find out where you are departing from or look at the name of the port on your ticket. In Piraeus there are several boarding gates, identified by a letter E followed by a number, so check which one is your turn before you embark on your adventure!
And be careful, this is important! Arrive at the port in advance: ideally an hour before, depending on whether you are traveling with a vehicle or not. The embarkation is usually agile, but it is always better to have some margin. If you already have experience traveling, you surely know that arriving on time can save you more than one scare.
Best time to travel by ferry in the Greek islands
The Greek islands are a year-round tourist destination, but the best time to travel by ferry depends on your personal preferences and the activities you wish to do. Below, we detail the characteristics of the different seasons of the year:
Spring (April to June)
Spring in Greece is a wonderful time to travel, as the weather is mild and pleasant, without the extreme heat of summer. In addition, the islands are not so crowded with tourists, allowing you to enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere. Flowers are in full bloom and nature is at its peak. It is the ideal time for those who prefer to avoid the crowds and enjoy the peace and beauty of the islands.
Summer (July and August)
Summer is the high season in Greece, which means there will be more tourists, higher prices and a vibrant atmosphere on the islands. Temperatures are warm, often above 30°C, and the sea is at its warmest. The most popular islands, such as Mykonos and Santorini, will be full of life, with a wide range of tourist activities, bars, restaurants and festivals. If you prefer a livelier atmosphere and the opportunity to interact with other travelers, this is the perfect time of year.

Autumn (September to October)
Autumn is another excellent season to visit the Greek islands. Temperatures are still pleasant, but the number of tourists starts to decrease. It is an ideal time to enjoy the islands with fewer crowds, and you can find lower prices on ferry tickets and accommodation. The islands are still vibrant, but the atmosphere is more relaxed compared to summer.
Winter (November to March)
During the winter, the Greek islands experience a drop in temperatures, especially in the northern islands, but the climate remains moderately mild compared to other European destinations. The low season means fewer tourists, allowing for a quieter and more authentic experience, although some islands and ferry services may be limited during these months.
What is the price of the tickets
Definitely the price of the ferry ticket depends on the destination you choose. However, in our search engine you can find almost any price, from islands like Agkistri to 13€ or others. There are islands for all tastes, as well as types of tickets. Depending on whether you would like to travel more comfortably in your cabin, or enjoy the adventure on deck, the price will vary.
You can also benefit from discounts depending on the ferry company you travel with. There may be special offers and fixed discounts for students, families, pensioners or military corps. Of course, what will make the difference in the price of the ticket is when you buy it. If you want to travel in high season, hurry! Buy your ticket in advance.
What to expect from your ferry trip
Unlike a flight, on the ferry you don’t have to be stuck in a seat with your neighbor’s elbow invading your living space. Here you can get up, stretch your legs, stroll around the deck and discover areas with restaurants, cafes and even couches where you could take a vacation-worthy nap.

Depending on the company, you may even find entertainment on board: television, recreation areas and some other perfect corner to disconnect without the need for airplane mode. And that’s not to mention the spectacular scenery that accompanies you throughout the journey. Between islands, blue sky and infinite sea, it is impossible not to make your own mental movie… Greek version, of course.
And best of all: the ferry is much more eco-friendly than the plane. So while you’re sailing, you’re not only enjoying the ride, you’re also making a small, big gesture for the planet.
Can I take my pet with me?
Of course! Most ferry companies allow your little companion on board. However, the policies for bringing your pet differ from one company to another. So before boarding, check the specific conditions of the company you’re traveling with here to find out exactly what you need to bring.
…What about my car?
Whether you can take your car with you depends on the company you travel with. Not all ferries have a hold for vehicles, so don’t assume that your car will board with you just like that. Some ferries are happy to accept it (as if it were a passenger), while others are for foot passengers only. So before you hit the road to the port, make sure your ferry accepts vehicles… or you’ll end up boarding and your car on a road trip through the parking lot.

Tips for booking your ferry ticket
- Book in advance: Especially in high season, it is advisable to book your ferry tickets in advance. This guarantees your place on the ferry and allows you to choose from more schedule and route options. It will also allow you to take advantage of available offers.
- Check schedules and routes: Ferry schedules can vary depending on the season, so it is important to check routes and schedules before making your reservation. Some islands do not have daily ferries, so it is crucial to plan your trip in advance.
- Compare prices: Use platforms such as Ferryscanner to compare prices between different ferry companies and find the best deals. In addition, these platforms often offer discounts and exclusive promotions for travelers.
What to bring on your ferry trip
Although ferry rides are usually comfortable, it is important to bring certain essentials to ensure that your experience is as pleasant as possible:
- Comfortable and light clothing: Possibly the most important thing if you don’t want to ruin your trip. In most of the Greek islands the weather is warm, so it is important to bring adequate clothing to enjoy the ferry rides and activities on the islands.
- Sun protection: Even if you are on board, don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun during the trips. You won’t be the first to arrive at your destination with a shrimp-like tan…
- Entertainment: Although ferry rides are usually pleasant, it is useful to bring books, music or a magazine to keep you entertained during the trip.
- Important documents: Be sure to bring your ferry tickets, your passport or ID and any other documents needed for your trip.
Greek islands we recommend
Greece is home to more than 6,000 islands, but not all of them are accessible by ferry or ideal for tourists. Although Mykonos and Santorini are the most famous islands, the Hellenic country has a looong list of islands worth visiting. If you are planning to visit Santorini, don’t forget to check measures and practical information about earthquakes. Here we suggest some of the most popular and attractive ones for your trip:
Crete
Crete is the largest island of Greece and is full of history and culture. It is home to the remains of the Palace of Knossos, one of the oldest civilizations in the world. In addition to its archaeological heritage, Crete offers beautiful natural landscapes, from mountains to beaches with crystal clear waters. It is perfect for those who wish to combine history, nature and relaxation.
Naxos
Naxos is a lesser known island, but highly appreciated for its natural beauty and tranquility. Here you can enjoy wide golden sandy beaches, charming villages and excellent cuisine. It is a perfect destination for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy an authentic Greek island, like something out of a medieval series!
Rhodes
Rhodes is famous for its medieval old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island offers a combination of history, culture and beautiful beaches. You can tour the old town of Rhodes Town, visit the ancient temples and explore the quiet corners of the island.
Milos
If you want to discover a jewel of the Cyclades, other than Santorini or Mykonos, you have to go to Milos. If you were a group of friends, Milos would be the shyest. It combines lunar beaches, white villages with instagrammable blue gates to infinity, and sunsets that would make any influencer cry. And if archeology is your thing… Venus de Milos is familiar to you? It came from here!

Siros
And if you want to know the capital of the Cyclades, you definitely have to go to Syros. Marble streets, neoclassical heritage and crystal clear beaches. If you want to feel like you’re in a Greek period soap opera, put Syros on your bucket list. It’s the perfect island that blends the traditional with the modern. It’s not only a recommendation for those looking for beauty, but also a calm trip: you won’t find hordes of tourists with selfie sticks.
