While Greece is typically associated with the hot beaming sun and paradise islands, it’s still a great place to visit during the winter. So if you’re thinking of a trip away in the new year, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve put together a list of the best destinations to visit in the first few months of the year, including Athens, Thessaloniki and more.
Athens

Still the primary destination in Greece, Athens is rich with culture and history and can be a more enjoyable place to visit when the weather is cooler. During the winter, visiting the historic landmarks, such as the Acropolis of Athens and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, can be more enjoyable than the summer when the sun is beating down on you. It’s also an accessible city, with entry points via air, land and sea. Arrive at the port of Piraeus after booking your ferry tickets with Ferryscanner and visit the museums, quaint marinas and charming traditional neighbourhoods nearby.
Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a sprawling metropolis and a year-round destination in Greece. It might be small, but the city packs a mighty punch and is full of museums, archaeological sites, Byzantine vestiges and restaurants serving up Greek delights. In fact, it’s considered the country’s food capital and has a range of tastes from traditional cuisine to exciting takes on classic dishes. There’s also a lively club scene in Thessaloniki, with Eightball and Partytura offering some of the best nightlife in the city.
Crete

The largest island in Greece should be at the top of your destination list during the winter as well as the summer months. Crete’s southern location means you can enjoy milder temperatures than other parts of the country, while its size lends itself to plenty to do and see. Visit natural landmarks like the Minoan Palace of Knossos, the Monastery of Arkadi or spend some time enjoying a brisk breeze on the beaches.
Arachova

Known as the Mykonos of the Winter, Arachova is arguably the most popular winter destination in Greece. It’s nearby Mount Parnassos, Greece’s largest skiing resort, so you can hit the slopes and enjoy a unique Greek holiday. Even if you choose to stay in Arachova, there’s still plenty of activities. The village features ski rental outlets, high-end shops, luxury hotels and five-star restaurants serving delicious bites. There’s a lively nightlife scene here too, which is still popular during the winter months.
Karpenisi

Enjoy spectacular mountain views in Karpenisi, which sits on the slopes of Mount Timfristos in Evritania. It’s not uncommon for people to refer to it as the Switzerland of Greece, thanks to Karpenisi’s enchanting scenery. It’s another popular ski destination, though there’s more here than snow-capped slopes. The stone villages are full of charm and will have you snapping a picture or two (or three), while Proussos is one of the most important monasteries in the whole of Greece and is located just 25 kilometres outside of Karpenisi.
The best of Greece in the winter
If you thought Greece was only a destination for the summer months, then think again. It’s full of life during the winter months, whether you’re hitting the slopes or are sightseeing in Athens and Thessaloniki. Head to Greece and experience the country from a different perspective if you’re looking for exciting holiday ideas in the new year filled with beauty, culture and warm welcomes from the locals.
