About Brittany Ferries

Brittany Ferries began operations in 1972 with the aim of exporting cauliflowers and artichokes from Roscoff to Plymouth. The company was founded by a group of local Breton farmers and the Chamber of Commerce in northern Finistère.

With the UK’s entry into the European Union, the company saw an opportunity to expand, boosting both freight transport and tourism between France and Britain. In 1981, it added routes to Santander in northern Spain and Cork in Ireland.

Today, Brittany Ferries operates eight ships and employs over 2,500 people. It carries around 2 million passengers, 780,000 vehicles, and 170,000 freight units each year, handling nearly half of all ferry traffic in the western English Channel.

For group travel, it is recommended to arrive 120 minutes before for ferry crossings and 90 minutes for holiday packages.

When leaving your vehicle, make sure to take everything you need for the journey, as access to the garage is not permitted during the crossing. Brittany Ferries Pet Policy

Bringing your furry companion on board? With a bit of planning, travelling with your pet is simple and enjoyable. Here’s a quick guide to help you get ready:

  • Your pet must be microchipped. Your pet’s microchip will be scanned, and documents checked at check-in.
  • Rabies vaccination must be up to date and recorded in the passport or certificate.
  • If travelling from the UK to the EU, a valid EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is required unless your pet has an EU or Northern Ireland passport. It would also be necessary vaccination records, your pet passport or AHC matching the microchip number.
  • CITES or health certificates may be required for animals other than dogs, cats, or ferrets (e.g. birds, turtles).
  • Dogs entering the UK must receive tapeworm treatment (echinococcus) 24–120 hours before arrival, documented by a vet.

Boarding Process:

  • Upon arrival at the port, the crew will guide you through boarding procedures. If your pet will stay in the vehicle, ensure it is well-ventilated (windows slightly open), with enough space to stand, lie down, and move around comfortably.
  • Bring everything you need before parking in the car deck, as access is restricted once the ship departs. In some cases, visits to your pet are allowed—ask for details at the onboard information desk.
  • With the exception of assistance dogs, pets are only allowed in designated pet areas.
  • Dogs must be on a lead and wear a muzzle at all times outside the vehicle, kennel, or cabin.
  • On ships like Pont-Aven, Galicia, and Salamanca, you can visit the kennels anytime, except during a short daily cleaning period. However, pets may not be taken out during these visits.
  • Owners are responsible for keeping pet areas clean. Waste bags and bins are provided in pet zones.

Important: Pets are only allowed in designated areas. Dogs must be leashed and muzzled at all times when outside the vehicle, kennel, or cabin. Only assistance dogs are permitted in passenger areas.

Guiding Principles

Brittany Ferries is a pioneer in sustainable maritime travel, connecting France, Spain, Ireland, and the UK since 1972. Founded by Breton farmers, the company remains rooted in regional values while investing in innovation and environmental responsibility.

A small environmental surcharge now applies under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to support greener crossings. New LNG-powered and hybrid-electric ships like Salamanca, Santoña, and Saint-Malo are designed to cut emissions and drive the transition to net-zero.

Beyond transport, Brittany Ferries promotes local economies, sustainable tourism, and cultural exchange, serving as a vital link between communities on both sides of the Channel.
