The Channel Tunnel: an Engineering Feat
The Channel Tunnel opened in 1994, and was built by over 13,000 workers using giant tunnel-boring machines. Today, it remains one of Europe’s greatest triumphs in construction. During its production, some of the machines were so large they couldn’t be removed; only turned and buried in place! Fun fact: The chalk dug from the tunnel created Samphire Hoe, a nature reserve at the base of the White Cliffs of Dover.
