Our experience on board: Moby Legacy and Athara of Tirrenia

Our experience on board: Moby Legacy and Athara of Tirrenia

6 June 2025 • Natalia Sabariego Peces

At Ferryscanner, we care about maintaining close and sincere relationships with our partners to not only enrich our offers, but also to understand in depth the experiences of our users. As part of this philosophy, our colleague Irini Tzoumani, on behalf of Ferryscanner, was invited to live a fam trip, organized together with two of our most valuable strategic allies: Moby Lines and Tirrenia.

For several days, Irini embarked on two different routes from mainland Italy to the beautiful island of Sardinia. First she traveled with Moby Lines aboard the modern Moby Legacy, and then with Tirrenia on the reliable Athara. What follows is a detailed chronicle of his experience, loaded with personal impressions, observations and genuine enthusiasm.

A journey with a purpose: to know in order to make people know

This trip was not only an opportunity to relax or to enjoy with the family. It was a mission for our team to know precisely what is the experience of our users: services on board, the conditions of the boats, what needs are covered during the trip to Sardinia

Our colleague Irini has been able to enjoy the experience so that you can make the most of it on your next trip.

Irini was our special envoy and she took on her role with responsibility. She knew that her observations would be the basis on which we would improve our recommendations and optimize the experience of travelers who rely on Ferryscanner. Irini’s adventure was divided into two particularly popular routes – Livorno to Olbia and Genoa to Porto Torres –and it was vital to experience both first-hand. Here is her testimony!

  • “Traveling with both companies provided me with a solid contrast between two different styles of ferry service.”

From the very first moment, Irini noticed the difference in the approach each company offered to the passenger experience. On the Moby Legacy, everything evoked a thoughtful, relaxed and aesthetically modern atmosphere. Boarding was smooth, the staff was prepared for the high volume of passengers, and the ferry’s design invited leisurely exploration. Everything seemed to be in place to make the journey a positive memory, not just a means to reach the destination.

First route with Athara: from Genoa to Porto Torres

The first leg of this experience took Irini aboard the Tirrenia ferry Athara. Although it is an older vessel, the Athara retains an efficiency and warmth that, in Irini’s words, “give it a very special character”. From the first step on board, she perceived a more functional, more direct, but equally cared-for atmosphere. It was not just a luxurious experience, but a practical, well-thought-out and, above all, dedicatedly maintained proposal.

Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, you can find a cabin to go all together.

Comfortable beds for resting

  • “Athara, although a bit older, was also comfortable. It has all the basics: clean cabins, restaurant, self-service and even a small movie theater (although not in use for now). There is also a children’s area (playground) and a relaxation room for passengers who want to rest, read a book or work.”

The assigned stateroom was clean, well appointed and ready to rest after a day of travel. The restaurant, moreover, was a pleasant surprise. The menu offered a simple but well-executed selection of Italian dishes, and the dining room staff was not only professional, but genuinely friendly. Irini even noted that the meal was one of the most enjoyable moments of the trip, both for its taste and the attention received.

  • “On Athara, I enjoyed the food in the restaurant. Highly recommended also for passengers: the staff is very friendly and everything is in perfect condition! Although the ferry is 25 years old, the facilities and cabins are very well maintained. Let’s not forget to mention that the Athara is decorated inside and out with our favorite hero: Superman! A fun touch.”

Another nice touch was the decoration of the ferry. Athara is themed with Superman images, both in common areas and on the outside. Although it might seem a minor detail, she found it an original way to add personality to the ferry and make it more attractive, especially for families with children. In this line, she also found a play area designed for the little ones, as well as a relaxation room, ideal for those who travel alone or wish to read or work in a quiet environment.

Athara superman vessel, Irini's trip

The vessel recreated DC’s famous superhero protagonist.

In conclusion, the ship offered enough nooks and crannies to rest, read or simply watch the sea. Tirrenia’s focus seemed to be on reliability, on ensuring that every basic need was effectively met.

Second part: Moby Legacy and the route from Livorno to Olbia

Back on the mainland in Italy, Irini embarked on the second part of this trip: Genoa to Porto Torres. An experience that had some stylistic differences from her first ferry trip. Boarding was smooth, the staff was prepared for the high volume of passengers, and the layout of the ferry invited leisurely exploration. Everything seemed to be in place to make the journey a positive memory, not just a means to reach the destination.

You will be able to enjoy large screens with the latest entertainment.

There will always be room for you, whether relaxing or working.

Accuracy and quality of travel is the most important aspect of boarding with Moby Lines.

Stepping aboard the Moby Legacy was, in Irini’s words, like stepping into a small boutique cruise ship. Every nook and cranny was designed to provide a sense of modern comfort. The corridors were wide, the common areas were well lit, and the cabins offered a combination of space, functionality and style that pleasantly surprised her. The materials, cleanliness and layout demonstrated that the design was not an afterthought, but an integral part of the vessel’s value proposition.

  • “The Moby Legacy definitely impressed me. It’s a newer, modern ferry, with a sleek interior and plenty of onboard options – from restaurants and lounges to large hallways and spacious staterooms. There were also tactile, blister-like markings for the visually impaired, throughout the ships area. It felt more like a mini-cruise or a five-of-five-star hotel than a simple transport.”

One of the features that most caught his attention was the presence of tactile blister-type signage in all areas of the ferry. These markers, designed for the visually impaired, represent a clear demonstration of Moby Lines’ commitment to inclusivity. She found it to be a successful initiative, aligned with Ferryscanner’s vision to offer all passengers a safe and comfortable experience.

On board you will find several restaurants and catering services

You can relax in your assigned seat

During the trip, one of the most memorable moments for Irini was sitting in one of the windowed lounges and watching the sun begin to rise over the horizon. The calm sea, the golden light of dawn, the silence interrupted only by the sound of the water… all contributed to a scene that would be hard to forget. Later, she explored the outside area, where the ferry has a bar with music, ideal for socializing or relaxing, especially in high season when the deck comes alive with travelers enjoying the weather and the view.

In terms of services, Irini found multiple dining options, designed for different tastes and budgets. Although on this trip she did not have the opportunity to try them all, she was able to note the variety and quality of the atmosphere in each gastronomic space. The treatment of the staff was another highlight: friendly, present, but without invading, thus creating a sense of accompaniment without rigidity.

  • “The best part for me was relaxing on one of the several loungers on the Moby Legacy, watching the sea and the sunrise from the windows. I also enjoyed my stay in the spacious and modern stateroom. There is also an outside bar with music, which is open in high season (June through September usually).”

Two different proposals, one commitment

What Irini valued most was precisely the difference in approach between the two companies. While Moby Lines is committed to offering an immersive experience, mixing aesthetics, comfort and leisure, Tirrenia presents itself as a solid option, designed for those who prioritize functionality without neglecting comfort. This diversity allows Ferryscanner to adapt its recommendations to different traveler profiles: from families looking for entertainment on board, to professionals who require a quiet environment to work while traveling.

These are the views from Athara, in the Genoa horionte.

Both carriers, in their own way, demonstrated commitment to service quality. Irini found no significant flaws, just different styles. Each passenger will find value in one or the other, depending on their priorities. The fundamental thing, he concluded, is to be able to speak from real experience, with their own arguments and not only from catalogs or technical data sheets.

  • “Both routes offer beautiful views and are strategic for connecting to Sardinia. I would especially recommend the Livorno-Olbia route to those looking for a more scenic and exclusive travel experience.”

One step closer to being your benchmark in ferry travel

With this fam trip, Ferryscanner takes a firm step towards its goal of building a platform based on authenticity, knowledge and respect for the traveler. Thanks to Irini, we now have a voice of our own that can speak with propriety about what it means to travel with Moby Lines or Tirrenia, and how each experience translates into a more refined recommendation.

We would especially like to thank both companies for their willingness, generosity and professionalism. These kinds of collaborations are what inspire us to continue growing, learning and offering the best to those who choose us to plan their maritime adventures.
