ANEK Lines has been a pillar of Greek maritime travel since its founding on April 10, 1967, as “Anonymous Shipping Company of Crete S.A.” (ANEK LINES). Established by the people of Crete, it became the first community-based ferry company, aiming to improve the island’s connections to mainland Greece. With headquarters in Chania, the company operates from state-of-the-art facilities, including a conference center with a capacity of 500 people. Its passenger shipping operations began in September 1970 with the historic “KYDON”, serving the Piraeus–Chania route.

ANEK Lines Check-In & Boarding

Arrival Time

Please arrive at the boarding area at least one hour before departure. If you are traveling with a vehicle, arrive early and follow crew instructions for loading.

eTicket

Electronic tickets are available. A PDF will be sent to your email for easy printing or showing on your phone.

Web Check-In

Online check-in is supported and required to receive your eTicket. Make sure to complete it before your trip.

Paper Ticket

You do not need a paper ticket to board, but if you prefer one, you can request it from our Ferryscanner office or the ferry company’s central agency. Boarding is also allowed with just your eTicket.

Vehicles

Vehicles are allowed on 6 out of 7 ANEK Lines vessels. You can also bring bicycles and motorcycles. For cars, campers, or trucks, check availability and prices during booking or ask our support team.

Alternative Fuel Vehicles

If you are bringing an alternative fuel vehicle, make sure to declare it when booking. This includes:

  • Hybrid and fully electric vehicles with batteries
  • Vehicles that use liquefied or compressed gas like LPG or natural gas

Important Safety Info for AFVs

  • Electric vehicles must have no more than 40 percent battery charge when boarding
  • LPG and gas vehicles must have tanks filled no more than 50 percent
  • Vehicles with damaged or faulty batteries or fuel systems will not be allowed on board
  • Tell the crew immediately if your vehicle shows a warning signal

Required Documents

Bring a valid boarding pass and either a passport or ID. If you are traveling with a vehicle, bring your license and registration. If you have a discounted ticket, be ready to show proof. The company may refuse boarding if documents are missing or incorrect. If entry is denied by border authorities, return travel will be at your own expense.

Early Disembarkation

If you decide to leave the ship before departure, tell the Purser’s Office and take your luggage with you. Removing a vehicle may not be possible, since loading spots are arranged in advance.

Passengers without a Vehicle

ANEK Lines Pet Policy

Pets are welcome aboard ANEK Lines vessels, with designated areas ensuring their comfort and safety. Pet-friendly cabins are available but must be reserved in advance, with a ticket required for each pet. Pet travel guidelines:

  • Pets over 10 kg must stay in the ship’s kennel.
  • Pets under 10 kg may stay in their owner’s cabin but could be required to use a kennel.
  • Maximum of 2 pets allowed per pet-friendly cabin.
  • A maximum of 5 pets per passenger, as per EU regulations.
  • Leash and muzzle required when pets are on open decks; they cannot roam freely indoors or outside.
  • Service dogs are exempt from kennel requirements but must remain leashed.
  • Pet ticket registration is mandatory and must include:
    • Animal Health Book or Passport Number
    • Animal Marking Number
    • Animal Category (Companion, Therapy, Assistance)
    • Animal Size (Small ≤10 kg, Large >10 kg)

Required Documents:

  • Valid pet passport or health certificate.
  • Proof of vaccination (rabies immunization required).

For hygiene reasons, pets are not allowed in bars, restaurants, and other indoor public areas. Special hygiene areas are available on board. Unaccompanied pets are not accepted. Owners are responsible for their pet’s hygiene, safety, and compliance with travel regulations throughout the journey.

ANEK Lines Luggage Allowance

You can bring up to 50 kg of luggage or one cubic meter per person free of charge. Please place your bags in the areas shown by the crew. There are no strict size limits, but packing smart will make your trip easier.

If you are carrying valuables, hand them over to the Chief Purser for safekeeping and ask for a receipt. The company is not responsible for any luggage that is not stored with the Purser. This includes money, valuables, or personal items left in cabins, public areas, or vehicles.
